Kaparot for money
Today, most Jews in the Diaspora do the ritual of kaparot for money. To do this, they raise their hand with money clasped in it and make rotating movements above their heads with the bills clasped in their hands. There is no specific amount for kaparot for money, but undoubtedly the more the better. The money from kaparot is donated to the tzedakah. There are alahic authorities who believe that for a number of reasons it is preferable to make kaparot for money in our time.
Practice and text of kaparot
Holding the money in the right hand, saying the passage «The sons of men who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, shackled by the fetters of poverty and iron, G-d will bring them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and will break their fetters. Reckless — because they suffer for their criminal ways and their sins, and their souls reject all food, they will reach the gates of death. And in grief they will cry out to the Lord, and He will deliver them from their calamities, send His word and heal them, save them from destruction. They will praise G-d for His mercy and for the miracles which He has shown to the sons of men. If a person has only one intercessor angel out of a thousand to put in a word of vindication, G-d will have mercy on that person, saying: «deliver him from falling into the underworld, I have found redemption for him».
In Sephardic communities this passage is not read.
Then they raise the rooster above their heads and make rotational movements with their hand, saying: «Zeh khalifati, zeh tmurati, zeh kaparati. Ze a-kesef yeleh lezdaka, vaani ekanes lehayim tovim uleshalom» (This is a substitute for me; this is in my place; this is my ransom. This rooster will be slaughtered, and I will enter into good life and peace).
